Acoustic Coupler.
The acoustic coupler is an interface device for coupling electrical signals through acoustic means, typically within and outside of a telephone device.
The connection is achieved by converting electrical signals from the telephone line into sound and then re-converting the sound back into the necessary electrical signals for the end terminal, such as a teletype, rather than through a direct electrical connection.
In use from 1937 to 1984 when it was replaced by modems.
